UX@UA Meetup: Building an Inclusive Research Practice

UX@UA Meetup: Building an Inclusive Research Practice

In the third and final part of our series on Representation and Inclusion in UX and Tech, we'll talk about how to build an inclusive UX research practice. Speakers:

  • Sonu Mishra is a UX Researcher for the Office of Research Information Services at the University of Washington. Prior to starting at ORIS, Sonu earned her BA at the University of Pennsylvania in Linguistics, a master's degree in Information Science at the University of Michigan, worked as a UX Specialist at the University of Michigan Libraries, and more recently earned her PhD at the University of Washington Information School. She'll present, "Reflections from a Minority who is not an Authority," on some of her personal experience in recruiting for and representing diversity in research, including strategies she has learned and tensions she has encountered, and lead a discussion about overcoming challenges in inclusive research.
  • Michelle Ortiz is Director of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. She'll present on cognitive biases that impact UX research and suggestions for mitigating them. She'll also share how cognitive biases can cause us to exclude diverse viewpoints and perpetuate oppression.
  • Ace Vu is the founder of Human of Us, accessibility and inclusive design advocate, and former Principal Product Designer at Intuit. Ace will share stories of people with disabilities chasing and living up to their dreams, which he curated on his recent sabbatical trip to South and Southeast Asia.

All are welcome and you don't have to be affiliated with the University of Arizona to join us. Join us at 4:30pm to kick things off with opt-in breakout rooms. The presentations will start at 4:45pm.

We'll record this event, so if you can't make it, register on Zoom anyway and we'll email you when the recording and transcript are ready.
